This research focuses on the category of cultural words in the novel Holding Up the Universe (2016) by choosing the proper translation technique and knowing the acceptability. This study aims to assess translation results based on Molina and Albir’s technique and see how cultural factors influence translation techniques in the novel. For these purposes, the researcher collects all the cultural words and then categorizes them based on Peter Newmark’s cultural word theory. The data obtained are then analyzed based on the translation technique from Molina and Albir. And to analyze the level of acceptance of the translated text using the theory from Nababan. The results show that fifty cultural words found in this novel are: five cultural words as Ecology, nineteen cultural words as Material Culture, two cultural words as Social Culture, twenty cultural words as Organizations, and four cultural words as Gesture and Habits. There are four techniques found in the novel: thirty-one words use Borrowing, one-word use Transposition, three words use Generalization, and fifteen words use Adaptation. It shows that Borrowing and Adaptation are the most used techniques. Also, to see the acceptance level among readers, a case study was conducted on twenty-eight teenage readers as informants. Thirteen out of fifty cultural words selected indicate that four words are acceptable, three words are less acceptable, and six words are unacceptable. The data above show that the use of translation techniques affects the level of acceptance of the translation results to the reader.
