This thesis advances theoretical propositions regarding cultural identity
construction in the novel The Reeducation of Cherry Truong by Aimee Phan. The
most central thesis argued is that memory and roots are related to the process of
cultural identity construction. The thesis emphasizes the process of being and
becoming in identity construction delivered by Stuart Hall. The finding of this
thesis is every character has different kind of memory and roots that based on the
generation they belong to. The memory that they have determines their relation to
the roots, which help the process of identity construction. Therefore, the character
that closed to the roots is more likely to face the process of being meanwhile the
character that far from the roots is more likely to go through the process of
becoming. In conclusion, the root indicates that it helps the process of
constructing identity, which help the characters either to straighten their roots
identity or to straighten their new identity.
