The research aims to explore how Americans view Muslim women in the novel The
Girl in the Tangerine Scarf by Mohja Kahf and how they challenge American’s stereotypes
toward them. This is qualitative research using a descriptive method. Using the Subaltern
theory by Gayatri Spivak (1988), the writer finds that Americans view Muslim women as
backward, weak, and oppressed. Americans give bad stereotypes of Muslim women and
regard them as a bad influence and threat. Khadra, Zuhura, and Hanifa as Muslim women in
the novel challenge the bad stereotypes toward them. They began with their courage and
understanding of their Muslim identity better. They dare to open up and socialize with
Americans. They show that Muslim women are not backward, weak, and oppressed. Khadra
succeeds in achieving her goal of becoming a photographer, doing the activities she wants to
do, and renewing her hijab appearance. Hanifa can achieve her goal becomes a car racer.
Zuhura becomes an active Muslim woman in her campus organization and becomes the first
Muslim who writes a newspaper on her campus and get a portion on the front page. Muslim
women in the novel can challenge America's bad stereotype toward them.
