This research aims to show how the main character, Thurgood Marshall, is depicted and how he represents African American lawyer in Marshall (2017) movie. The researcher used the qualitative method with descriptive analysis in this research. Moreover, the researcher used the characterization theory by Petrie and Boggs and the theory of representation by Stuart Hall as the main theory. The researcher collected the data from the scenes and the dialogues of the characters in the movie. Then, the data collected is analyzed using Petrie and Boggs's characterization theory to reveal how the main character is portrayed. In addition, the theory of representation by Stuart Hall is applied in this research to reveal how the main character represents African American lawyer in Marshall (2017) movie. The result shows that Thurgood Marshall is portrayed as smart, persuasive, responsible, caring about his education, and also an anti-racist person. Moreover, in this movie, Thurgood Marshall represents African American lawyer as the target of racial discrimination, animalization, and racial violence by white people in the law system
