Mariam and Laila, as the two main female characters, have to face domestic violence in their marriage to Rasheed. Thus, this research focused on analyzing various forms of violence that occur in the novel, then how the victims respond, and what kind of freedom they get afterward. The aim of this research to show how domestic violence is portrayed in A Thousand Splendid Suns and how the novel challenged domestic violence through the two main female characters. The researcher used a qualitative method in this research and a domestic violence theory by Ganley (2002) to support this research. The result shows that 1) the two main female characters had to face three forms of domestic violence such as physical violence, psychological violence, and sexual violence; and 2) the two female characters fight Rasheed's behavior and they get different freedoms, both physically and psychologically. In conclusion, the researcher found that Mariam and Laila as the two female characters in A Thousand Splendid Suns novel tried to challenge the practice of domestic violence instead of just silently confronted it like how women are expected to do.
