Moral Disengagement, Grim Reaper and Justification: Deconstructive Reading of Coen Brothers’ No Country for Old Men. Thesis: English Letters
Department, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, State Islamic University Syarif Hidayatullah, Jakarta, 2021.The objective of this thesis is to provide an alternative reading of the psychopathic stigma of Anton Chigurh's character, the main antagonist in the Coen Brothers' movie No Country for Old Men (2007). This research adopts the qualitative method and descriptive analysis technique. The data obtained will then be analyzed using Derrida's deconstruction theory. By following the tenets of deconstructive reading, it will disclose another possible meaning achieved from the exploration of the
repressed moral aspects of his character stigmatization. Grim Reaper Complex, a psychological mechanism formulated from Bandura’s Moral disengagement and the Grim Reaper's portrayal that his character represents throughout the film, are the findings of this study that could serve as an alternative reading as well as democratic interpretation to disturb the monotonous psychopathic stigma on his character.
