This research discusses about the use of illocutionary speech acts in a deceptive message uttered by Anna that influence the failure of strategy of deception that Anna did based on the characteristics of verbal lies by using Searle’s speech act theory, interpersonal deception theory by Buller and Burgoon, and CIA’s book about how to detect a deception. The aims of this research are to identify the illocutionary acts used by Anna, to identify the strategy of deception that Anna did, and to analyze the correlation between the uses of illocutionary acts affect the failure of Anna’s strategy of deception. The writer uses qualitative method with descriptive analysis techniques to analyze the data. All the data are collected from the dialogues between Anna and her target that consist of deceptive messages. The results of the study show that the illocutionary acts used by Anna when committing deception consist of 1) eleven assertives act which consists of denying, stating, confessing, and explaining, 2) four expressive acts that consists of satirizing, apologizing, and complaining, 3) five directive acts which consists of suggesting, requesting, asking, and commanding. To succeed her interpersonal deception act, Anna also did several strategies of deception that consist of five falsification strategies, six concealment strategies, and five equivocation strategies. Moreover, the characteristics of verbal lies found in the deceptive messages that Anna conveyed to fellow spy agents that influence the failure of Anna’s deception strategy consists of inappropriate questions, failure to answers, convincing statement, overly specific answers, and failure to understand a simple questions.
