The focus of this research are: (1) to identify the types of idiom consisted in The
Adventure of Tom Sawyer novel, (2) to compare the translation strategy of idiom
indicated by two translators, (3). and to analyze its readability level. The
researcher was applied qualitative research method by collecting and analyzing
the data. The data were : (1) the types of idiom classified by Jennifer Seidl and
Mcmordie (1988), (2) the idiom translation strategy indicated by two translators
based on Mona Baker’s theory (1992), (3) and readability level measurement
based on Nababan’s theory (2012). Based on research findings, there were found
54 idioms, but only 18 samples was analyzed, 3 of each 6 types of idiom. The
idiom based on special category was the most frequent idiom found followed by
the idiom combining adjective and noun, verbal idiom, phrasal verb idiom,
idiomatic pair, and idiom with preposition. From 18 samples, TL1 (Target
Language 1) translation was dominated by Similar meaning but dissimilar form
strategy whereas TL2 (Target Language 2) translation was subjugated by the
paraphrase strategy. Furthermore, the readability level measurement for TL1
obtained 2,2 point on average while the TL2 acquired 2,4 point on average.
Although the readability level of two translators counted overally as medium
readability, the TL2 was slightly higher than TL1. It was occured because the
Paraphrase Strategy (Standar language) was applied mostly by TL2. Meanwhile,
the similar meaning but dissimilar form (idiomatic language) was employed
frequently by TL1 which is less familiarized by target language readers.
