Lithuania : the road to independence
Russia. There was always Russia. Since the dawn of time, it seemed, there were the ceaseless efforts of the Russian Empire ever intent on… no…obsessed with occupying and Russifying its bordering lands. Oh, there were other invaders from time to time. And, from time to time, we were the invaders. That’s how it was in our neck of the woods. We were warrior states. But nothing like Russia. There was always Russia. Russia’s aim was to expunge the ethnic identities and national aspirations of everyone they conquered, all who resided on their frontiers. Invading. Colonizing. Russifying – turning them all into Russians. The end game? Domination – of everything – of everyone. It was as though they were an entirely different species of human. They couldn’t help themselves. They had to control everything – and everyone. They were like that then. They’re still like that now.
