This research aims to identify and analyze how the relationship between humans
and animals is depicted in the context of the circus world using the film Dumbo as
the main object of study. The data used in this research consists of two types,
namely primary and secondary data. Primary data was obtained from the Disney
animated film entitled Dumbo which provides a visual and narrative depiction of
the relationship between humans and animals in the circus. Meanwhile, secondary
data was obtained from various sources such as scientific journals, books, website
articles and other references relevant to this research topic. This research uses
qualitative methods by applying the ecocritical theory put forward by Greg Garrard
to analyze the collected data. The results of this research conclude that the
relationship between humans and animals is greatly influenced by the way humans
view animals. Humans who view animals as living creatures who have the right to
life and welfare tend to treat animals with respect, affection and protection. They
see animals as part of the ecosystem that must be protected and respected. On the
other hand, humans who view animals only as objects or resources to be exploited
will tend to treat animals arbitrarily, even violently, without considering the
animal's welfare and basic rights. Animal exploitation in this form often goes hand
in hand with environmental exploitation, which ultimately destroys the balance of
the ecosystem as a whole. Even though humans try not to exploit nature and switch
to more sustainable practices, it is still difficult for them to completely escape
exploitative behavior towards the environment because of the demands of life and
the needs that require them to do so.
