This research discusses how the film portrays representations of heteronormativity and gender
performativity on male characters as homosexuals who live duality in My Policeman film. This study
aims to show how social and legal pressures in the 1950s forced individuals to hide their sexual
orientation and undergo gender performativity that conformed to society’s expectations of ‘normal
gender’. This research uses a qualitative method and uses Queer Theory using Eve Kososfsky Sedgwick
and Film Theory using Boggs and Petrie’s. The results of this study show that My Policeman film
depicts heteronormative norms and traditional gender norms. First, the male characters are presented as
homosexual through various emotional interactions and intimate relationships that illustrate the depth
and complexity of their identities. Secondly, shows the social pressures and expectations on male
characters to adhere to traditional gender norms, reflecting the heteronormativity that exists in society
by hiding their sexual identity or ‘closet’. Third, the homosexual characters attempt to represent gender
performativity by living up to their true identities, despite facing the risk of discrimination and social
exclusion measures. This research highlights how heteronormativity and gender performativity norms
affect character behavior and life choices, especially in the context of pressure to comply with socially
accepted heterosexual norms.
