This research aims to understand the relationship between capitalism and the
environment as portrayed in the film "Dark Waters" (2019), with a specific focus on
‘DuPont’ chemical company. It further examines this relationship from an ecosocialist
perspective by utilizing Michael Löwy's ecosocialism theory as the primary analytical
framework. This is a qualitative research, and it involves a critical analysis of the data to
answer the research question. The data used in this research is a collection of scenes and
dialogues from the film that highlights DuPont’s influences on the environment. The
findings reveal the relationship between DuPont's and the environment is detrimental and
exploitative. DuPont is causing significant environmental harms through the improper
disposal of hazardous chemical waste (PFOA/C8) to minimize cost and maximize profit.
This harmful action had been ongoing for decades because DuPont poses socioeconomic
and political powers which allow them to silence the resistance from the impacted victim.
This relationship in the film reinforces ecosocialist’s argument that capitalism will always
prioritize profit over environmental well-being. Thus, ecosocialism advocates for
systemic changes that prioritize long-term environmental sustainability over short-term
profit to safeguard the future of the planet.
