This research aims to identify the function of swear words and investigate the strategies
applied in the translation of swear words in the Netflix series Sex Education and the factors
that influence the choice of strategies. The research employs contextual analysis as a
research design relying on swear words in Indonesian subtitle and their original as its
primary data. The collected data were qualitatively analyzed using Wajnryb’s function of
swear words and Koponen’s swear word translation strategy. From the 39 data on swear
words, this research found all three functions of swear words, namely abusive, catharsis,
and social. The writer also found that all five strategies are applied, namely swear word to
swear word, swear word left out, swear word toned down, whole phrase/sentence left out,
and swear word strengthened. Swear word to swear word was the most dominant strategy
as it maintained the intensity, character’s negative feelings, and dialogue style, and let the
audience acknowledge the character’s state of mind. Based on the data analysis, the reasons
or factors that can influence the choice of strategies were situational, linguistic, cultural,
medium, and audience contexts. The research suggests that the translator continuously
explores swear words in the source and target languages to gain a deep understanding. In
this sense, the translator can focus on maintaining the intended message and emotional
impact while considering the context related.
