This thesis aims to discuss the works of Life and Death Instinct depicted by
Arthur Brennan, the main character of The Sea of Trees film, based on his mannerisms and interactions towards otheer and situations. This research uses qualitative descriptive method, by describing the data found in the film, for this case, Arthur Brennan’s characteristic. The data described is analyzed using the Psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud, specifically the concept of The Life and
Death Instincts. The thesis argues that (1) Arthur relations with people around him affected his mental condition especially with his wife, Joan. (2) Arthur’s suicide
thought is the result of guilt because of unfulfilled desire in his Life Instinct can lead to his Death Instinct and how the harsh environment affect his Life Instinct back.
