The research aims to understand that anxiety and defense mechanism of Lee Israel in film Can You Ever Forgive Me (2018). This research uses the psychoanalysis theory by Sigmund Freud that focuses on the anxiety and defense mechanism. The method uses for this research is qualitative descriptive. The result of the research shows that Lee‟s is portrayal as the anxiety and defense mechanism. The results are of the research shows Lee who has several traits that are depicted such as introvert, verbal aggressive, and obsessed. Some of it generates anxiety and presents the self-defense mechanisms of Lee. There are has two types of anxiety is neurotic anxiety and four types of defense mechanism is denial, repression, projection, and rationalization.
