This research aims to examine the personality structure and defense mechanism of
the main antagonist character using Psychoanalysis theory bu Sigmund Freud and
to see that human childhood has impact to shape human behavior and personality.
This research uses A Simple Favor (2018) film directed by Paul Feig because it
shows how the main character Emily Nelson’s unstable personality structure
formed due to bad childhood experience. The method used for this research is
descriptive qualitative to analyze the data collected from dialogues in the script and
screenshots of several scene in the film. This research found that Emily’s
problematic personality and behavior caused by dominant id and weak superego
which formed due to her abusive parents and violence she experienced in her
childhood. Emily uses four types of defense mechanism such as acting out,
displacement, reaction formation and fantasy to reduce anxiety when Emily feel
threatened by a certain situation. Therefore, it is concluded that Emily’s unbalanced
personality structure caused her to act immorally and weak superego leads her to
commit crime and ignore the society norms.
