This research aims to analyze the psychological condition of Daelyn Rice, a suicidal teenager who is the main character of By the Time You Read This, I'll Be Dead by Julie Anne Peters. Daelyn Rice has been bullied because of her overweighed body and experienced sexual harassments at school which caused her attempt suicide twice but she failed both times, then she planned for her third suicide attempt. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods and Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis theory to analyze the psychological aspect of Daelyn Rice which are her anxiety, defense mechanisms, and death instinct. The result of this thesis shows that Daelyn Rice experienced anxiety in three types which are realistic anxiety, neurotic anxiety, and moral anxiety. Daelyn Rice used five types of defense mechanisms to protect herself from the anxiety producing thoughts which are denial, fantasy, rationalization, reaction formation, and suppression. Those defense mechanisms had a negative impact on Daelyn Rice’s death instinct because it caused her to want to end her life with suicide. Daelyn’s death instincts are shown through her suicidal ideations and suicide attempts.
