The unit analysis of this study is the midsommar (2019) film directed by Ari Aster. The study focuses on the representation of paganism in the horror film midsommar. This study uses qualitative descriptive analysis as the method to analyze paganism signs through the film. This study aims to see how paganism is represented in midsommar (2019) and how it affects the theme of the film as a whole. All of the data are collected from the dialogues of the characters and the pictures or screen - captures that depict the paganism of the film. The data was collected using the intentional approach to explain the paganism signs in the film and how paganism is represented.
Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that the result shows that this film has successfully represented paganism particularly: social pagan traditions, swedish history, and mythology. furthermore, the result analysis shows that for the most part, the sign of paganism depicted in midsommar is based on truth. Paganism was represented through symbols, actions, dialogues, costumes, beliefs and ceremonies. The horror element in this film is created by the character emotional effect and the character murder that is carried out secretly.
