This research aimed to identify the translation technique applied and to
discover the effect of the translation techniques taken towards the quality of
accuracy in translating the cultural words. The source of data were a novel entitled
Laskar Pelangi and its English translation. The qualitative descriptive method is
used to analyze cultural words based on cultural words categorization theory by
Newmark, theory of translation technique by Molina and Albir, and theory of
translation quality by Nababan. Findings of this study showed that there were ten
types of translation techniques; amplification, literal, borrowing, calque,
description, adaptation, generalization, transposition, particularization and
modulation. It was presented that the level of translation accuracy is high due to the
fact there were 40 out of 60 data stated to be accurate, 17 data were considered to
be less accurate and 3 data were classified into inaccurate. The use of description
technique contributed to give the highest accuracy with 10 out of 40 data, borrowing
technique presented the highest less accuracy with 6 out of 17 data, and calque
technique showed the highest inaccuracy with 2 out of 3 data.
