This research is a discourse study that aims to analyze personal references
that support cohesiveness in the body of the Open Letter to Baghdadi. It also
explains the role of endophora reference that makes the sentences cohesive. The
researcher uses the theory of Cohesion proposed by Halliday and Hasan for this
study. The data are collected by reading the body of the open letter. Qualitative
method is applied to analyze the collected data.
The result shows 197 items of personal reference found in the body of the
open letter to support cohesiveness. They consist of personal pronoun items and
possessive determiner items. All of them uses anaphoric relation.
This study concludes that personal reference used by the authors to support
cohesiveness in the body of the letter by virtue of the items of personal pronoun
and possessive determiner. There are 197 items of personal reference contained in
the body of the open letter. They are 144 items of personal pronoun which consist
of the item he 15.7%, the item him 3.6%, the item she 0.5%, the item they 18.8%,
the item them 16.2%, and the item it 18.3%. While possessive determiner items
found 53 items that consist of the item his 7.6%, the item their 16.8%, and the
item its 2.5%. The authors do not use both the item her as personal pronoun or
possessive determiner and possessive pronouns. And the role of endophoric
function especially anaphora gives cohesive relations between the items above and
its antecedents.
