This research focused on finding out the semantic shift in the two
Indonesian translations of Animal Farm novel by George Orwell and also the
influence of the semantic shift on the level of translation accuracy. The researcher
used qualitative method by reading and collecting the data of semantic shift from
the two translation, the first translation by Mahbub Djunaidi entitled
Binatangisme and the other translation by Bakdi Soemanto with same title with
the original novel, Animal Farm. After collecting the data, the researcher analyzed
the data by classifying the kinds of semant ic shift based on Cosima Bruno’s
theory and later the researcher also analyzed the impact of the semantic shift in
the two translation of Animal Farm novel which correlated with quality of the
translat ion of accuracy based on Nababan’s theory. Furthermore, based on the
analysis, the researcher found that there are 16 data in the TL 1 that contained
semantic shifts. There are 9 data undergo Generalization, 2 data undergo
specification, 3 data undergo mutation/deletion, 1 data undergo mutation/addition,
and as well as mutation/radical change of meaning that occur in 1 data. Therefore
in the TL 2 which fewer semantic shifts are found, that only found 6 data. There
are 2 data in the Generalization, 2 data in the Specification, mutation/deletion and
mutation/addition each 1 data is found, and in the TL 2 not found a
mutation/radical change of meaning. The researcher concludes that the there were
several semantic shifts that caused the translation results to be not accurate
because there are the source language is not translated at all into the target
language, in other words the translator omitted or deleted the meaning which
actually contains messages from the original author. This can reduce the quality of
the accuracy of the translation.
