Conversational Overlap and Interruption in The Second Presidential Debate: Hillary Clinton VS Donald Trump

This research aims to analyze the conversational overlap and interruption
that contains in the conversation of the second presidential debate between
Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump in Washington University, St. Louis. The
objectives of the research are: (1) to identify the kinds of overlap and interruption
in the conversation of the second presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and
Donald Trump (2) to analyze how the conversation of the second presidential
debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trumpshow the reason to do overlap
and interruption. To get the answer to the research problem, this study uses a
theory of overlap proposed by Emanuel Schegloff and theory of interruption
proposed by Murata.This research uses a qualitative method. The result of this
research shows that in the debate there are24datacategorized as overlap and 38
data categorized as an interruption, so interruption occurred more than overlap.
And from 62 data, breaking up is the common reason for overlap and interruption.
