The Turning Red film is a children’s animation film in 2022. This thesis
analyzes the anxiety of a teenager because of an overprotective mother in Turning
Red (2022) film through a psychoanalysis approach related to anxiety and defense
mechanisms. This study aims to observe the influence of parenting styles in
forming teenage character and emotional intelligence. Furthermore, this study is
using the qualitative descriptive method to analyze the psychological condition of
Meilin Lee’s character as a teenager in this film using psychoanalysis theory after
describing her character using the character and characterization theory, and also
cinematography theory to analyze the scenes in the film. The data are collected
supported by screenshots and dialogues in the film. Based on the research finding,
the writer finds that Meilin is a dynamic character because she experiences
character changes. Meilin who was described as a kind and cheerful child turns
into a labile and anxious child because of her mother’s overprotective
upbringing. Because her mother always forbade her to do everything she wanted
and she cannot express her emotions directly to her mother which makes her
unable to control her emotions and have anxiety. Meilin experiences moral
anxiety that will arises when she violates the moral values she believes in.
Therefore, Meilin used her self-defense mechanism to reduce her anxiety. The
writer found that the form of Meilin’s self-defense mechanism is in the form of a
red panda. The Meilin red panda will appear whenever she feels anxious to reduce
her anxiety. In this film, there are several defense mechanisms that Meilin uses
those are; repression, regression, sublimation, and displacement.
