This movie discuss to the simulation world called Victory Project that
created by main male character, Frank. Hence, this research focuses on both real
life and virtual reality with the setting in the 1950s which depicts a husband-wife
relationship. This research explores the depiction of women in the Don't Worry
Darling movie, with a focus on their domestic responsibilities, their
representation both in real life and virtual reality, and their acts of resistance to
these roles. Feminist existentialist theory by Simone de Beauvoir is used to analyze
the issues in this movie. Therefore, the descriptive qualitative method is used as the
research method. The Victory Project perpetuates domestic oppression, focusing on
women’s societal expectation and controlling roles. Women are oppressed
domestically because men as husbands have control over women in the marriage
relationship. It shapes gender construction and does not accept men as subordinate
figures. In real life, women experience independence and responsibilities more than
domestic duties. While in virtual life, they are limited to perpetuated domestic roles,
designed to be perfect but ultimately robbing them of their freedom and autonomy,
highlighting the contrast between control and reality. Through Margaret and Alice’s
character, a resistance emerges to reclaim their autonomy and independence.
Hence, this research explore how femininity and masculinity perpetuate
stereotypes, positioning men as dominant breadwinners and women as confined to
domestic chores.
