This research aims to analyze the types of speech acts and the fulfillment of felicity
conditions during the Q&A session at the 2023 IISS Shangri-La Dialogue, using Austin’s
speech act theory and Searle’s speech act classification. The study employed a descriptive
qualitative method, incorporating documentation techniques and data analysis cards to
ensure the accuracy and reliability of the findings. The results reveal that the speech acts in
the Q&A interaction between the delegates and Prabowo Subianto was notably poor. The
majority of speech acts in the Q&A session, particularly directive acts, failed to meet the
fulfillment condition, with only two of the 15 analyzed speech acts fully satisfying all
felicity conditions. The lack of responses to 11 speech acts and 2 inconsistencies in
addressing key aspects of certain inquiries contributed to these failures.The study
concludes that unaddressed questions, vague or contradictory responses, and incomplete
fulfillment of felicity conditions significantly hindered effective communication during the
session, highlighting a need for greater precision and clarity in high-stakes diplomatic
interactions.
