Coal miners’ perspectives in the vice news documentary: transitivity analysis

No image available for this title
This research employs Halliday's transitivity theory to examine the
perspectives of coal miners on climate change, utilizing descriptive
qualitative methods on the VICE News documentary as a case study. This
research examines the communicative patterns and perspectives of
miners with regard to this environmental issue. The findings indicate that
material processes are the dominant theme, accounting for 27% of the
data. This underscores the emphasis on tangible actions at the workplace.
Cognitive and relational processes (14%) revealed awareness, although
opinions were frequently divided between economic and environmental
interests. Verbal processes (12%) demonstrate miners' engagement with
climate discourse through communication. The prevalence of non
human entities (52.5%) indicates a broader narrative focus on the
industrial context, rather than solely on individuals. The research
concludes that the documentary illustrates the complex challenges
miners face in balancing economic needs with environmental awareness,
providing insight into this community's perspective in the climate change
debate.
