The purpose of this study is to analyze the meanings of slang terms used by
Generation Alpha on TikTok and examine the factors that influence the creation
of slang words. Common slang phrases that are commonly used by Generation
Alpha are the subject of the study: sus, rizz, sigma, skibidi, cap, mewing and aura.
Ten instructional TikTok creator accounts that are well- known for regularly using
and elaborating on these slang terms provided the data. Employing a qualitative
method, the research interprets the meanings of these slang terms within the social
and cultural framework of Generation Alpha's digital communication.
Furthermore, it explores the cultural, social, and technological factors that have
shaped this generation's slang and set it apart from earlier ones. This investigation
supports Liana Barseghyan’s theory, which distinguishes six types of slang based
on the process of its formation, namely derivation, compounding, shortening,
blending, conversion, and sound imitation. In the discussion, it was found that in
its formation process, slang is divided into six types based on Liana Barseghyan's
theory, namely derivation (4), compounding (3), shortening (10), blending (1),
conversion (15), and sound imitation (3). The analysis emphasizes that the
factors influencing the formation of slang words are digital culture and online
communities. Additionally, the significant influence of digital culture such as
social media, meme, or series also online communities interaction in creating
modern slang expands our understanding of how language has evolved within
digital youth culture. Overall this research reinforces Liana Barseghyan’s theory
by illustrating the diverse processes through which modern slang is created and
disseminated.
