This thesis investigates female masculinity and the phenomenon of
symbolic violence, which often goes unnoticed and is normalized in society. The
research aims to shed light on the concept of symbolic violence and aims to examine
how symbolic violence is still persists against women who do not even exhibit
traditional stereotypical female traits, examining how female characters portray
masculinity and exploring the contexts in which symbolic violence manifests. The
analysis utilizes Judith Halberstam’s theory of female masculinity with Peter
Lehman’s concept of masculinity, and Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic
violence with concept arena, habitus and capital. Qualitative methods with
descriptive analysis are employed, focusing on textual dialogue and scene excerpts
from the movie "The Intern." The character of Jules Ostin exemplifies masculinity
traits such as power, courage, heroism, and leadership. In line with Halberstam’s
theory, female masculinity is expressed through performative masculine behaviors
and physical appearances. Symbolic violence is identified in two arenas within the
film: social interactions, and workplace environments.
