This research aims to find out how the character of Phil Burbank, as the main character, constructs the hegemony of masculinity in The Power of the Dog (2021) movie. The researcher used a qualitative descriptive analysis method and applied R.W. Connell's theory of masculinity hegemony to analyze the data. The results showed that Phil Burbank's character is portrayed as dominant, aggressive and resilient, but it turns out that he hides his vulnerability. His sexuality is the source of his vulnerability, therefore he hides it by emphasizing his dominance and aggression. Phil Burbank attempts to construct his hegemonic masculinity through power, aggression, technical competence and suppressing his sexuality. The incongruity of his sexuality with what is expected by the prevailing norms makes Phil's hegemonic masculinity vulnerable and threatened with failure, so he is forced to suppress his sexuality. In conclusion, The Power of the Dog movie is an excellent depiction of Phil Burbank's attempts to establish and maintain his hegemonic masculinity, showing the profound impact of societal expectations on personal identity. The suppression of his sexuality is a poignant example of the destructive nature of these rigid norms, demonstrating the internal conflict that arises from a life dictated by hegemonic masculinity.
