This research aims to explore the forms of consumerism depicted in The
Menu (2022) movie as a critique of capitalism, as well as the impact of
consumerism on the characters in the film. Using a qualitative approach
with consumerism theory from a Marxist perspective, this study is
divided into two main focuses. First, the study analyzes the forms of
consumerism that serve as a critique of capitalism, including commodity
fetishism and overconsumption. Commodity fetishism is depicted in the
film through the view that goods and experiences are treated as objects
with value beyond their practical use, replacing real social relationships
with consumption objects. Meanwhile, overconsumption is represented
by the characters who continuously buy and consume luxury items, as a
way to demonstrate social status and gain temporary satisfaction, which
ultimately reflects deep dissatisfaction within the capitalist system.
Second, the study evaluates the impact of consumerism on the characters
in the film, particularly in the context of alienation and social inequality.
Alienation is seen when the characters feel disconnected from the results
of their work and are unappreciated, while social inequality is shown
through class differences that affect their experiences and access to a
better life. The results of this study indicate that The Menu functions as a
sharp critique of capitalism by illustrating how consumerism leads to
dissatisfaction and social injustice, as well as the negative impacts it has
on individuals within capitalist society.
