Gender differences in language present one aspect of the wide linguistic
variations that exist in society, which indicate gaps in status and power. In practice,
women and men tend to develop different patterns in language use. However, the
women and men language variations are not wholly distinct, but they share the same
shape in varying amounts and frequencies. This research aims to analyze the
way women and men use the conversational strategies aspect by Jennifer Coates
(2016) to obtain their goals and objectives in communication. The writer used the
Misbehavior movie as the object of analysis. Further, it explores how the gender
dynamic and power relation occurred in the film. This research uses descriptive
qualitative methods to obtain the data. After analyzing the data, the writer found
102 features of conversational strategies used by women and 97 features of
conversational strategies used by men. It is found that the most dominant feature
female characters use is questions and for male characters is commands and
directives. This differences reveals that women use the features of conversational
strategy to show support to the interlocutor and to express admiration. Whereas,
men use this strategy to assert dominance and to establish status.
