Reading between the Lines: A Semiotic Analysis of Crisis Narrative in Don’t Look Up Film

This study aims to analyze and reveal how society and government in ‘Don’t Look Up’ film are
portrayed through the meaning of denotation and connotation on every sign found. The author
uses a qualitative descriptive method by collecting data that involves collecting, processing, and
recording data from various documents including text, images, audio, and video related to the
film. The author analyzes the film using semiotic theory by Roland Barthes to find the meaning
of the signs. The study explains how ‘Don’t Look Up’ shows the crisis between society and
government through the signs found in the film. The results show that there are several crises
in ‘Don’t Look Up’ film: 1) Environmental Threat, 2) Conflict Between Science and Media, 3)
Public Reaction and Apathy, 4) Politics and Interests, 5) Leadership Crisis.
