Gender stereotypes create a social order that only prioritizes the existence of
men over women. Gender stereotypes often led to violence against women, such
objectification. Objectification is when women's bodies are seen and treated as sexual
objects. This objectification leads to self-objectification. Through self-objectification,
women can also take revenge for what men have done to them. This research aims to
find out how the main female character challenges gender stereotypes through her
sexual objectification by herself. The main female character’s stereotypes are depicted
through her characterization. This research used the qualitative method, using the
theory of characterization by Joseph. M. Boggs (1996) and the theory of
objectification by Fredrickson and Roberts (1997). The main female character, Angel,
is depicted as helpless, beautiful, fragile, obedient, and despicable through her
characterization, which applied to her stereotypes. Through these stereotypes, Angel
is oppressed by men, such as Alex, Paul, and Duke. As a result, Angel manages to
challenge her stereotypes through revenge. By using her sexuality, Angel exploits
men's feelings and thoughts through her actions. This is proven by how Alex, Paul,
and Duke end up in misfortune. Objectification of Angel influences her to sexually
objectify herself. However, Angel is using her body to be sexualized as an opportunity
for her to revenge men's oppression. This then proves how Angel succeeded in
challenging the stereotypes within herself that were previously described through her
characterization.
