This research uses Naomi Wolf's Feminism theory in Beauty Myth concept and Jon
Lewis’ film theory to analyze the film Misbehaviour (2020), with a focus on
analyzing the resistance towards traditional beauty standards in Miss World 1970
in the film Misbehaviour. The method used is descriptive qualitative method by
describing and analyzing the film. This research aims to show the defiance of
traditional beauty standards in Miss World 1970 as operationalized in the film.
Misbehaviour is a film that represents the struggle against traditional beauty
standards through the lens of feminist activism. In this film, there is a conflict
between feminist activists and the organizing company of Miss World 1970. The
results of this research show that there are three agents that interact with each other
in building the construction of beauty standards, namely contestants who bring their
own standards, companies that provide services to meet beauty standards according
to the market, and the media that always blows up beautiful standards in society.
Second, this film also shows the objectification of women through the focus on
physical attributes, restrictive judging criteria, and media portrayal. Finally,
Misbehaviour also depicts ten forms of resistance against traditional beauty
standard from feminist activists who fight back by campaigning, speaking out on
television, anarchist demonstrations, Anti-Apharteid politic. And also, the victory
of Jennifer Hosten, Miss Grenada offers a new standard that blacks can compete
and be recognized for their beauty.
