This research study particularly aims to reveal the hidden unconscious desires of
Hideaki Anno, which is manifested in the narrative aspect of an anime that he wrote titled
Neon Genesis Evangelion (2019) and how it affects the narrative aspects itself. This study
used Jacques Lacan’s psychoanalytic theory as the main theoretical approach and used
Seymour Chatman’s theory of narrative structure as a complimentary theory. This study
finds that Hideaki Anno unconscious desires are affecting the story aspects of the anime
and it results in the controversial climax of the story. The results show by utilizing
Seymour Chatman’s theory of narrative structure, this study breaks down the story aspect
of Evangelion including plot (events) and characters or settings (existents). Based on the
results of the analysis from previous chapter, the researcher also finds that Hideaki Anno
manifested both of his narcissistic (“Hedgehog” and “Run”) and anaclitic (“Dolls” and
“Scenario”) desires in the story aspects of Evangelion anime through several signifiers
that frequently appearing in the dialogues or monologues of several characters in the
story. Furthermore, this study concludes that Anno is a subject of lack who manifests
both his unconscious narcissistic and anaclitic desires through the means of language as
signifiers.
