This research aims to study the strategies of translating idioms in the Indonesian subtitle of an
animated movie titled The Bad Guys (2022), which is an action-comedy movie that employs many quirky
usage of English idioms. First, the research strives to obtain a complete understanding of the idioms
found by exploring their figurative meaning and identifying the type of idioms based on Mc’Carthy and
O’Dell’s categorization of idiom. Then, the research identifies which Mona Baker idiom translation
strategies were implemented to translate each idiom found and examines the equivalence of the
translation by using Eugene A. Nida’s concept of dynamic and formal equivalence. The findings show
that Mona Baker’s strategy of translating idiom by paraphrasing it were used the most to translate English
idioms in the Indonesian subtitle of The Bad Guys. The other Mona Baker’s strategies that were
implemented are translating an idiom by omitting it and by using an idiom with a similar meaning, but
they were implemented in a much lesser quantity. The findings also show that the majority of idiom
translation that implemented these Mona Baker’s strategies are equivalent. They apply dynamic
equivalence, which is the appropriate type of equivalence for texts with entertainment purposes, and
convey meanings equivalently. A few idiom translations that were done literally without implementing
Mona Baker’s strategies were also found, but they were proven to not be equivalent and apply the
inappropriate type of equivalence, which is formal equivalence. Surprisingly, the findings also show that
a few translations that used Mona Baker’s strategies resulted in translations that are not equivalent and
partially equivalent. However, it was later discovered that they were caused by the translator’s failure in
understanding the idiom’s meaning correctly. Thus, the research concludes that Mona Baker’s strategies
of translating idioms are reliable and consistent in producing equivalent idiom translations.
