Metaphor translation is a difficult task due to it being a poetic device that would
sometimes cause confusion to the target text readers if translated literally. This study
research question is what is the translation procedure used in translating the metaphors in
the ―Yellowface‖ novel by R. F. Kuang. This study aims to identify the translation
procedures of metaphors in the novel ―Yellowface‖ by R.F. Kuang based on its cultural
criteria. The method used in this research is a qualitative method by identifying the
metaphor translation procedure used in translating the metaphor in the source text to the
target text. The theoretical framework used in this study is Newmark metaphor translation
procedure that categorizes seven types of process that happen when translating a
metaphor. The results show that from fifteen data of metaphors found in the novel, there
are ten metaphors translated into a different metaphor in the target text, four metaphors
translated into sense, and one metaphor translated literally with added sense. This study
concludes that cultural difference between the source text and the target text affects
metaphor translation.
