This research aims to analyze the portrayal of toxic masculinity and the use of
violence in the Nobody (2021) film. This research used qualitative methods and uses
theory of toxic masculinity by Michael Kimmel. Hutch, who initially chooses not to
fight the thieves, becomes underestimated by his family and neighbors, doubting his
ability as a protector. These feelings drive him to turn to violence to prove his worth
and protect his family, which he sees as the center of his masculine identity. This
protective instinct is linked to a reliance on violence and aggression. The findings
indicate that the main character, Hutch, exhibits traits of toxic masculinity, such as
dominance, aggression, and the use of violence to assert his masculinity. Hutch’s
actions are also motivated by his desire to protect his family. Hutch’s use of violence
reflects societal expectations for men to demonstrate dominance and control through
physical aggression. The violence he uses, including brutal acts such as the burning of
the enemy’s body, the use of guns and bombs, also reflects a deep-seated need to
control and protect his family. The study concludes the harmful effects of toxic
masculinity in the portrayal of the main character, it emphasize the pressure for men to
conform to societal expectations, including the need to protect, dominate, and resort to
violence when faced with a threat.
