The research intends to investigate the procedure of translating Tok Pisin words and phrases from the English novel The Shark Caller by Zillah Bethell into the Indonesian adaptation Sang Pemanggil Hiu by Endang Sulistyowati. This research employs qualitative methods with an explanatory case study employing Peter Newmark’s theory of translation procedure. The research additionally examine the derivation of Tok Pisin words from English, which serves as the lexifier language. The investigation revealed ninety-four results, which consisted of eighty-seven words and seven phrases. The researcher found that translator employed the following nine procedures: couplets for twenty-five data, synonyms for seventeen data, literal translation for thirteen data, modulation for thirteen data, transference for seven data, reduction for seven data, transposition for five data, paraphrase for five data, and cultural equivalence for two data. This research demonstrates that the incorporation of Tok Pisin words in the novel conforms to the English grammatical structure, permitting translation through literal and transposition procedures. The derivation of English words in Tok Pisin results in identical orthographies, facilitating the borrowing of words into target language text due to the familiarity of target readers with the English word forms. Besides, the Tok Pisin words often result in extensive double meanings in the English sentence. Therefore, the translator frequently opts to exclude or omit certain Tok Pisin words in the target text, thereby sacrificing the rendering of Papua New Guinean characteristics present in the text in favor of creating a comprehensible translation.
