This research explores the construction of hero in Fantastic Beasts and
Where to Find Them film by analyzing Newt Scamander's hero's journey and the
portrayal of masculine and feminine qualities found in his character throughout his
hero's journey. This research aims to investigate how the hero construction in the
film challenge the idea of hero that often defined by masculinity. Qualitative
research with descriptive analysis is employed as the methodology, utilizing the
Hero's Journey theory and the concepts of masculinity and femininity in gender
studies to provide a comprehensive analysis. The findings reveal that Newt
Scamander's character constructed the idea of becoming a hero by incorporating a
blend of both masculine qualities throughout his hero’s journey such as
determination, decisiveness, assertiveness, risk-taking, and competence, alongside
feminine qualities encompassing compassion, collaboration, understanding,
affection, and sensitivity. Through Newt Scamander's portrayal that embraces
feminine qualities throughout his hero’s journey, the film challenge traditional hero
stereotypes by highlighting caregiving, teamwork, emotional expression, and non-
confrontational problem-solving in heroic journey. Thus, it can be concluded that
the construction of hero in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them film challenge
the idea of hero by presenting Newt Scamander as a hero who embraces qualities
traditionally associated with femininity throughout his hero's journey and
challenges traditional hero stereotypes that are often defined by masculinity.
