Achieving equivalence in the translation of a text is a difficult task, given
that cultures play a part in the content of the text. It is even more so in the translation
of a humorous text, as translators are expected to achieve the same humorous effect
on the receiver of the translation. This research aims to look into whether or not a
professional translation from an established streaming platform is able to convey
the humorous effect of ST cultural jokes. To do that, this research utilizes
qualitative research to gather, analyze and interpret the data. With Koller’s
equivalence relations and Ross’ humor elements, the objectives of the study are able
to be met. The finding shows that pragmatic equivalence is the most dominant
equivalence relation followed by denotative equivalence and connotative
equivalence. Furthermore, pragmatic equivalence affects the humor elements of the
data by changing them, while denotative equivalence maintains them and
connotative equivalence partly maintains and partly changes them. Given that
pragmatic equivalence is dominant in the data and that it changes humor elements,
it is better for audiences to learn the ST culture to understand the cultural jokes
rather than relying on subtitles.
