Grice's theory is utilized by the researcher to analyze the conversational
implicature present in the characters' conversations of a science-fiction movie
entitled Tenet. A descriptive qualitative method and content analysis are employed
as the research approach, aiming to provide a detailed analysis of the collected
data. The data for this study are obtained by watching the movie, taking notes on
dialogue that contains implicatures, and subsequently analyzing each selected data
point using relevant research theory. This research focus on discovering the
conversation between Andrei Sator and other characters with intention to reveal
his character as an antagonist and how he deals with the characters he against
with. Upon analyzing the movie script, the researcher identified violating the
maxim of quantity and manner as the most common phenomenon, occurring six
times each maxim. This was followed by violating the maxim of quality and
relation, which occurred four times each maxim. These findings suggest that the
reason for the higher occurrence of violating the maxim of quantity and manner in
conversational implicature is the assumption that Andrei Sator disobeyed the
cooperative principle to keep his information of ending world plan stays in secret,
shift the topic so the other characters aren’t able to see his tricks and make the
others feel uncomfortable to have conversation with him.
