The problem of masculinity has become complicated in Asian literature especially
in anime, including several issues related to stereotyped gender problem in cyborg
“creation”. This study investigates how hegemonic and caring masculinity are
parallely depicted as the result of Japanese culture and western existence in the main
character, Juzo Inui in No Guns Life. This study uses the hegemonic masculinity
theory to find out Juzo masculinity “creation”, and caring masculinity as a
supporting theory to find out forced masculinity as Japanese culture coercion inside
the anime. Using the characterization theory of Reaske's theory in 1996 as the base
of analysis and the main theory of Hegemonic by Messerschmidt in 2018 with
supporting theory of caring masculinity by Elliot Karla in 2015. This analysis
focuses on analyzing the character's appearance, the way of character speaks,
dialogue between characters, language, and the actions of a character. This analysis
is divided into several parts, namely Juzo's appearance identity, Juzo’s personality,
Juzo's motives, Juzo's ambiguous personality, Juzo's hatred toward woman and
children, and Parallel hegemonic and caring masculinity. The results of the analysis
found that changes in Juzo's masculinity challenged the stereotypes of hegemonic
and caring masculinity as cultural assimilation of Japanese and western challenge
inside the anime, it provides a new perspective on eastern literature, especially for
anime.
