The purpose of this study is to discover the characteristics of the main character
and destructive behaviors that led to her developing Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
symptoms as a result of the traumatic experience. To examine the data, the writer employs
a qualitative method with descriptive analysis techniques to analyze the data. All
information is gathers from the film's scripted dialogue and visuals. This study applies the
theories of Character and Characterization by Petrie W. Dennis and Joseph M. Boggs, and
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder by American Psychiatric Association. The findings of this
study indicate that Sawyer possesses four characteristics: introvert, easily suspicious
person, emotionally unstable, and mythomania. The writer identified six minimum
symptoms by comparing her characteristics and behavior to those of someone with PostTraumatic Stress Disorder, the writer discovered six minimal symptoms that include 1)
Recurrent, intrusive recollections (images, thoughts, or perceptions) of the event (Criteria
B1), 2) Experiencing a feeling of detachment or estrangement from others (Criteria C1), 3)
Restricted range of affect (Criteria C2), 4) A sense of foreshortened future (Criteria C3), 5)
Hypervigilance (Criteria D1), 6) Exaggerated startle response (Criteria D2). This research
concludes that since her characteristics cannot help her to accept or escape her unpleasant
memories. The repression she should be aware of, takes control of her mind that finally
leading to certain destructive behaviors. Eventually, her destructive behavior become
symptoms of her Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
