Women are often deprived of their rights as human beings to enjoy real freedom. Problems of
culture and traditional values that still persist are difficult to resolve. Transition level and
modernization process still tighten up traditional culture. This research discusses about
representation of Chinese women’s existence in The Poppy War novel. This research uses a
qualitative method and descriptive analysis, also uses Stuart Hall's representation theory with
a constructionist approach. The data collection techniques in this research are documentation
and note-taking techniques that are used to obtain data by reading texts or literature. The results
of this research reveal that Rin as a Chinese woman character suffers injustice and
discrimination because of stereotypes derived from her dark skin and social caste. Rin is
described as an independent, accomplished, and courageous woman who has represented her
existence as a woman who has freedom and choice in her life, both in the domestic and public
spheres.
