This research aims to discover the impoliteness strategies of the characters
and their functions in Sherlock: The Hound of Baskerville through their actions.
Using the qualitative method, the research's data have been collected by watching,
understanding, taking notes, and identifying prior. The research is further concerned
with the kind of impoliteness that occurred and how the strategies actively
functioned in the film. Relied upon Jonathan Culpeper's theory of impoliteness
strategies, 54 data were obtained; 8 bald-on-record impoliteness, 14 positive
impoliteness, 24 negative impoliteness, and 8 off-record impoliteness. The research
also reveals the function of impoliteness based on the obtained data; however, each
function does not bound to a specific strategy. There are 17 affective impoliteness,
27 coercive impoliteness, and 10 entertaining impoliteness.
