This research discusses how John Green as a male author of Looking for Alaska perceived femininity by depicting a female character who seems to be aware of gender issues but still perpetuates stereotypical images of women nevertheless. The aims of this research are to see how Green conceptualizes femininity through his female character and identify the ideology that he tries to convey by creating such a character. To fulfill the aims, the researcher analyzes how John Green views femininity through Alaska Young. The methodology of this research is the qualitative method. The concept of woman as a reader or feminist critique by Elaine Showalter is applied to this research. This research found that John Green’s perspective of femininity is different from how female authors do because he gave stereotypical images of women including emotional, affectionate, and nurturing to Alaska Young which creates a misconception about women. Furthermore, he is attempted to convey his ideology of feminism by characterizing Alaska with several traits that contradict female stereotypes. The researcher found that by creating a female character who seems to be aware of gender issues but still preserves stereotypical gender images, John Green has proven to the readers that he is a feminist, but fails to depict woman accurately due to the misconception he creates about women in his novel through Alaska Young.
