Using the qualitative method, this research is aim to describe the way Abdi negotiates his identity mimicking American culture inspired by movies and music in his memoir Call Me American and also to find how the community around him responds to Abdi’s mimicry.
Based on the finding from the previous chapter, the researcher concluded that movies and music are important for Abdi. Abdi negotiates his identity and resists his culture by mimicking the American language, cultural values, and style from the movies and music. As a consequence, Abdi’s community’s response is to punish Abdi because the American cultures Abdi mimics are against what his community believes.
