This research aims to know the identity construction of Saira as the main character
in The Writing on My Forehead Novel through the identity concept by Stuart Hall. This
research method is qualitative using Close Textual Analysis technique, and the type of
research is descriptive. The purpose of this research is (1) to explain what aesthetic
strategy the author uses to describe Pakistani-Americans (2) to explain how Saira
constructs her identity. To support the analysis, the writer uses Identity theory by Stuart
Hall and literary devices. There are several results of this study. The first result covered
the kinds of aesthetic strategies used in describing the Pakistani-American portrayed in
the novel. Metaphor as the first aesthetic strategy is used in describing Pakistani-
American women in terms of physical appearance. Next, simile is used in portraying
Pakistani-American women’s culture appropriation. Lastly, flashback is used in
portraying the Saira’s reinforcement regarding their looks and destiny as women. The
second result includes the identity construction of Saira’s personality which is determined
by her cultural identity. Saira showed resistance that maintain her originality as a
Pakistani, openness that helped her to adjust with American’s culture, and articulation
that helped her to practice American ideologies and her own as a Pakistani in living her
life as a Pakistani-American woman living in America. The process of identity formation
through her surroundings such as her family as well as self-factors can be seen in Saira's
self-identity formation. Saira's character identity is being formed in order for her to
become more mature, capable of negotiating with her surroundings, and capable of
negotiating with her family
