This research aims to examine one of the novels written by Khaled Hosseini, The Kite Runner (2003), which centers around the main character, a boy named Amir. The purpose of this research is to discover how the characters of Amir and Baba might symbolize Afghan-American characters. Afghan-Americans referred to in this study are those who were born and grew up in Afghanistan, but got a lot of influence from America, through culture and social life. To achieve the objective, the writer examines how Afghan-American is represents through the characters, culture, and religion by using the theory of representation from Stuart Hall, also reveals how the character challenging the conservative ideology through the concept of ideology. The method uses in this research to investigate Hosseini’s novel is the close textual analysis and engaging representation theory from Stuart Hall. Based on the explanation from Stuart Hall, culture is created, formed and rooted in humans and then adapts to the surrounding environments. As a result, the objective of this research is examining and expounding how the novel depict Afghan-Americans character. It also reveal how the novel challenging the conservative ideology of Afghanistan through the character. Therefore, the Afghan-American character can be shown how they challenging the conservative ideology of Afghanistan from three sub chapter which tells about the characters way of life.
